The image of Thailand is closely associated with Buddhism. Yet since 1998, the country has been an observer member of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and several Muslim figures are included in its state apparatus.

It should be noted that the community is valued at 3,952.000, which means from 5% to 8% of the national population.

The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs estimates that 18% of Muslims live in the three southernmost provinces: Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat. The rest is scattered throughout the country, with an important demographic growth in Bangkok.

The Muslim population is quite diverse and includes some indigenous Thais and immigrants from many countries of the world such as China, Pakistan, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Indonesia.

In the three provinces of the Great South, Muslims are mainly of Malay origin. In the North and the urban centres, we find mostly Chinese ethnic Chin Ho (Hui people). There are also the Rohingya, Muslim of Burma, who fled the dictatorship and found refuge near the Burmese border.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2007, Thailand had 3494 mosques, mainly in the province of Pattani.
