Australia is one of the most multicultural countries, with more than a quarter of its population born abroad.

The earliest studies indicating the presence of Muslims on the Australian continent date back to the sixteenth century.

In the middle of the nineteenth century, Afghans migrated to Australia for work, they are known as '' Ganns ''.

In the aftermath of World War II, a large number of Muslim immigrants have spread to the Australian continent, coming from different countries: 41,470 from Turkey, 21,080 from Indonesia and 18,500 from Egypt. There are also immigrants coming from Yugoslavia, Palestine, China, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. More and more Indians have landed in Australia in recent years, as well as Iranians, Iraqis, Afghans and Somalis.

In 1964, the Australian Islamic Council was founded, known as the "Confederal Islamic Council" since 1975.

In 2011, the census estimated the Muslim population in Australia at 476,291 people, or 2.2% of the population.

The majority of Muslims are settled in the Cocos Islands, New South, Victoria and western Australia.
